thigh gap is a project that I started in honour of Eating Disorder Awareness week 2014 (February 23-March 1st). It is a series of poems using text found on “Pro Ana” websites.
Pro Ana is a term for a website/ blog/ twitter account etc promoting anorexia nervosa as a lifestyle choice rather than as a disease, and offering things like ‘tips and tricks’ on how to successfully starve yourself, diet plans, support groups, “thinspo” (photos of extremely thin women, often with captions like “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels”) etc.
Sites like instagram and pinterest have made a huge impact on removing these sorts of blogs and images from the internet, banning them or providing warnings when one searches for things labelled “pro ana” or “thinspo,” but we still have a long way to go: hopefully one day our daughters will not be sucked into these online worlds like I was as a young teenager.
Click through the slideshow to read each poem. In 2015 I have begun rewriting them to be stronger, more succinct pieces.
